Recommended changes to CCTV in West Craven

Published Saturday 14th August 10

Councillors on Pendle Council’s Executive will be recommended to centralise West Craven’s CCTV monitoring system at this week’s meeting (August 19th).

The proposal involves removing the management of CCTV systems at Barnoldswick Police Station and Earby Police Station in favour of utilising the Burnley Control Room.

This is where signals from CCTV systems in Nelson, Brierfield and Colne are already collected.

Pendle Council's Community Safety Manager Geoff Whitehead said: "The advantage of this approach is that it centralises our whole CCTV operation in one place and utilises the expertise we are already paying for in Burnley.

"It is the most effective and the least cost option at a time when we are having to look for efficiencies."

The move comes after an internal police review, carried out by Lancashire Headquarters, ruled that some CCTV equipment can no longer be housed in certain police stations.

An alternative would be to establish a separate base to house West Craven CCTV systems.

Councillor Mohammad Sakib, Pendle Council's Executive Member for Community Safety, said: "Whilst this would save police officers from West Craven having to travel to Burnley to view tapes, it would be too expensive in terms of rental and staffing costs, especially in the current economic climate.

"Viewing tapes in Burnley is what police in Colne and Nelson do already.

"It makes sense to more fully utilise a resource that we already invest in."
