Member of Parliament
MP for Pendle
Gordon Prentice
Gordon Prentice has been Member of Parliament for Pendle since 1992 when he won the seat from the Conservatives. His main political interests are tackling poverty, and improving housing and health, including dentistry.
He lives in Barnoldswick when not at Westminster. With so much outstanding countryside in and around Pendle, it became a longstanding personal ambition of his to see the land opened up to the people. His Private Members Bill on the "Right to Roam" led to the Government bringing in the Countryside and Rights of Way Act in 2000. This had a significant effect on opening up the countryside to the public.
Gordon is a member of the Public Administration Select Committee, which looks into the machinery of government issues. These have included the handling of occupational pensions, the publication of civil servants' memoirs, the honours system and the nomination to peerages of donors to political parties. He also sits on the human rights watchdog, the Council of Europe.
