Radiation Monitoring in Pendle

Environmental radioactivity testing

Our environment has always had radiation in it.

Natural radioactive materials can be found in the ground and in the air we breathe.

Radiation can be found in food, water and buildings.  It also occurs from manmade sources (nuclear power, weapons, medical sources and sterilisation processes).

Pendle and 11 other councils assisted RADMIL (Radiation Monitoring in Lancashire) in monitoring levels of radiation in the environment.  This programme has now ceased.

Data has been collected since 1985, and provides valuable information on the background levels of radiation within Lancashire.

If an accident occurred leading to a release of radioactive material, a Lancashire wide Emergency Plan would come into force.
