Gas Emergencies

Gas Leaks

If you smell gas or are worried about gas safety you can call the National Gas Emergency Number on 0800 111 999.

If you do smell gas, follow the simple rules below.

Don't

  • Smoke or strike matches
  • Turn electrical switches on or off

Do

  • Put out naked flames
  • Open doors and windows to ventilate the property
  • Turn off the gas supply at the meter (unless the smell of gas and the meter are in a cellar). Make sure any gas appliances are turned off
  • Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999

The National Gas Emergency Service deals with emergency calls from anywhere in the UK. Calls are dealt with through a call centre, where there are trained operators working 24/7 waiting to take your call.

The call centre agent will log the following information:

  • Address/location of the suspected gas escape or gas emergency
  • Number of people in the property
  • Where the smell is most noticeable
  • How long the smell has been noticeable
  • Whether any neighbours are affected
  • Your name and phone number
  • Any special circumstances or access information

Please note

Obtaining accurate address details including your postcode is very important as we need to ensure that we send engineers to exactly the right place. You will be asked to verify these details for this very reason.

You will then be asked questions specifically about the reported gas escape or gas emergency which will enable us to give you the right safety advice, such as:

  • Open doors and windows
  • Turn the gas off at the meter
  • Avoid the use of any naked flames or electrical switches

The information will be sent electronically to a gas engineer for action. They aim to attend all incidents within an hour.
