Local Air Quality Management
What is it?
Local Authorities are required to carry out monitoring of the air quality within their area and assess the results against the National Air Quality Objectives. For more information on air quality objectives and national air quality data, view the DEFRA website.
Every three years a full review and assessment report must be produced and in the intervening years the authority must submit a progress report. The main issues considered are the current air quality and how changes to industry or transport may impact, either positively or negatively, on the quality of air locally.
In 2010 a detailed assessment of air quality in the borough was carried out. You can see copies of this and the other air quality reports here.
The detailed assessment indicated that levels of pollution from road traffic in the Skipton Road/Windsor Street area of Colne were above the levels set down by the government. Therefore we have declared an Air Quality Management Area. This means we must develop a plan to reduce pollution in this area in consulation with residents and organisations such as the highways authority and public transport bodies. You can see a copy of the Order here.
