Pendle's Sustainable Community Strategy 2008-2018

Our Pendle, Our Future

"Our Pendle, Our Future", Pendle's Sustainable Community Strategy (SCS) has now been approved by the Council and Pendle Partnership (the Local Strategic Partnership for Pendle).

This is a key document for Pendle as it sets out our key challenges over the next 10 years and our key priorities for improving quality of life for everyone here in Pendle. This Strategy will help to shape all future Council and partner policies, strategies and action plans to ensure we are all "singing from the same hymn sheet".

Our Vision for Pendle is:

"We want Pendle to be a place where quality of life continues to improve and where people respect one another and their neighbourhoods. We want Pendle to be a place where everyone aspires to reach their full potential. We want to be recognised locally, regionally and nationally as a great area to live, learn, work, play and visit."

The Strategy outlines eight priority goals that will help us achieve our vision, these being:

  • To support confident communities that are socially cohesive, creative, tolerant and considerate of the needs of all ages and cultures.
  • To create and sustain a dynamic, competitive and healthy local economy - providing the jobs of the future and the talents and skills to fill them.
  • To create a vibrant housing market offering a mix of high quality and affordable housing for all.
  • To create a Borough in which people feel safe and crime continues to fall.
  • To help people to live long, healthy and independent lives.
  • To deepen our understanding and respect for the environment.
  • To do all we can to give our children and young people the⁞ best start in life and the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
  • To help older people live their lives in the way they choose and to support their independent and active living.

Achieving our vision in a way that delivers sustainable benefits relies on planning and delivering actions in a way that takes into account our cross cutting principles. These four principles are:

  • Ensuring fairness throughout Pendle
  • Limiting the use of natural resources
  • Engaging communities
  • Supporting a fair economy
