Titanic 100th Anniversary
Our special link with the Titanic
Pendle in Lancashire is getting events underway
for a Titanic Festival this year, to mark the 100th anniversary of
the sinking of the legendary ship.
Colne in Pendle has a special link with the Titanic, as the bandmaster Wallace Hartley came from the historic town.
Wallace and his band played valiantly on while the Titanic sank off the coast of Newfoundland in April 1912.
Pendle Council is co-ordinating a Titanic Festival of events to commemorate the bravery of Wallace Hartley. Events include two world premieres:
- A new musical concerto composed by local man Peter Young with a world-wide competition to chose a fitting title for it
- A major exhibition at Colne Municipal Hall bringing together Titanic memorabilia from a number of private collections for the first time.
Colne also has a newly opened Titanic in Lancashire Museum which explores our county's connections with the Titanic, from ship builders to passengers.
