Pendle is situated in East Lancashire about 25 miles to the north of Manchester. The borough has an interesting mix of both urban and rural areas and is overseen by the dramatic and imposing Pendle Hill. Pendle has some of the North West's most beautiful unspoilt and picturesque countryside, contrasting with former textile mill towns and urban areas with high levels of deprivation. Pendle is made up of five towns: Nelson, Colne, Barnoldswick, Earby and Brierfield and many villages.
The latest population figures show that Pendle's population has increased from 85,196 in 1991 to 89,300 in 2010. 2001 Census results show that 84.9% of the Borough's population is white with 14.1% being Asian or Asian British. 13.4% of the latter is Pakistani.
Unemployment has been consistently lower than the national average. However wards, such as Whitefield, Bradley, Southfield and Waterside tend to experience unemployment that is above the borough and national average.
