Car Recycling
Information
Every year in the UK approximately 2 million cars reach the end of their life. They may be involved in an accident or have become old and irreparable.
End of Life Vehicles (ELVs) are a good source of recyclable material and 80% of a vehicle can currently be recycled. Recent legislation requires this to increase to 85% by 2006 and 95% by 2015.
If you have no further use for your car - take it to a registered scrapyard or contact your local council. Your Trading Standards office will provide a list of registered scrapyards and vehicle dismantlers who will dispose of the car in the most environmentally sound way - there are around 4000 of these across the country.
- Contact Lancashire Trading Standards for more information on what vehicles you can recycle and where
Many councils will take your car away for nothing, or a relatively modest charge - typically £20-£50 - although there may be a wait for collection. You may get little or nothing for your clunker, but if it runs, has relatively new tyres or other parts that can be removed and sold, then you might get a few pounds for it.
Don't forget to inform the DVLA. When you dispose of your car, you should send the registration document to the DVLA, confirming that you have scrapped it.
