Additional grey bins, brown bins and sacks
You can order replacement refuse and recycling bins and sacks online or by calling Pendle Council.
Aerosol cans
Household aerosols can can be put into your brown bin for recycling collection (please remove the plastic top and do not pierce or squash). You can also take them to a can bank (Find your nearest cans recycling centre).
Asbestos
Household Waste Recycling Centres accept asbestos waste. Asbestos will only be accepted if wrapped in heavy duty polythene sheets. Smaller pieces should be double-bagged and securely sealed. Asbestos wrapping materials are provided free of charge (in limited quantities) for householders and can be collected from any HWRC.

Batteries
All household and car batteries are hazardous waste and recycling is always the best option. Take used batteries to your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre for disposal or Nelson Library is now collecting household batteries for a trial period.

These can be taken to your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre for disposal.
Bulky waste collection
Pendle Council provide special doorstep collections for large and bulky waste.
Please note removal of bags of household waste are not included in this service

Cans
Food and drink and aerosol cans can be put into your brown bin for your recycling collection (it helps to wash and squash them). You can also take them to a can bank (find your nearest cans recycling centre). Aluminium and steel cans can be deposited in all of the can banks in Pendle. Do NOT put paint containers or other chemicals into any of the can banks.
Cardboard
Household cardboard can be put into a carrier bag or cardboard box and left next to your other recycling for collection. Cardboard with foil or plastic lining e.g. milk and juice cartons should be put into the Grey Refuse Bin (or orange sack). You can also take cardboard to your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre for disposal.
Carrier bags
Most supermarkets have banks for recycling carrier bags. Most supermarkets sell bags for life which can be bought for a small price.

Clothes and textiles
Household clothes, shoes and textiles can be put into a red sack and left at the front of your property. Unwanted clothing - damaged or wearable - can be deposited in all of the borough's textile banks (find your nearest textiles recycling centre). This clothing is then given to charity shops, the homeless or even sent abroad.
You can convert your damaged clothing into items such as cleaning cloths, filling for furniture or car insulation, and even re-woven into new yarn or fabric.

Freecycle
Freecycle is an international recycling organisation, started in 2003, which provides individuals and non-profit organisations an internet-based forum to "recycle" unwanted household and other items.
Burnley and Pendle Freecycle is one of 396 local groups in the UK, run by volunteers, which offers an online board where members can post "Offers of items' or 'Wants for items'. The main rule is that items must be freely given and keep something out of a landfill tip.

Gas bottles
These can be taken to your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre for disposal.
Glass
Household bottles and jars can be put into your brown bin for your recycling collection (please rinse them out and remove the lids). Broken household glass should be wrapped in newspaper and put into your Grey Refuse Bin (or orange sack).
You can also take glass to a glass bank (find your nearest glass recycling centre). Always put the correct bottles in the correct recycling bank. Blue glass can be put into the green-coloured glass bank, and clear coatings can be put into the clear-coloured glass bank. Light bulbs, sheet glass or Pyrex type dishes should NEVER be put into any of the banks.
Public Houses are now being offered the opportunity to recycle.

Ink-jet cartridges
The British Red Cross provide freepost envelopes for you to send in your old inkjet cartridges for recycling. For every 1 Lexmark or HP inkjet cartridge the Red Cross will recieve £1, which has led to the charity raising £23,000 already so far. You can reduce the amount of Addressed junk mail you receive by registering with the Mail Preference Service.
Unaddressed junk mail - Contact the Royal Mail Door to Door, Opt Outs, Kingsmead House, Oxpens Road, Oxford. OX1 1RX to opt out of door to door unaddressed mail.
Local Mail - Put a 'No Junk Mail' postcard by your letter box.

Paper
Household paper, including newspapers, magazines, junk mail, leaflets and envelopes including ones with windows can be put into your a cardboard box or sack for recycling collection. Milk and juice cartons and any paper with a plastic or foil lining will need to go into the Grey Refuse Bin (or orange sack). You can also take paper to a paper bank (find your nearest paper recycling centre). All types of paper and cardboard (except paper lined with foil or plastic) can be put into the paper bank.
Paint
Paint can be taken to your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre for disposal.
Permits

Plastic bags
Some supermarkets have banks for recycling carrier bags, check out your local store. Most supermarkets sell bags for life, which can be bought for a small price.

Household plastic bottles can be put into the Brown Bin for recycling collection. You can also take your plastic bottles to a plastic bottle bank (find your nearest plastic bottles recycling centre). Margarine tubs, yogurt pots, plastic packaging should be put into the Grey Refuse Bin (or orange sack).
Pet waste
You can obtain free pet waste bags from your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre. This makes the waste easily identifiable and reduces the hazards caused by pet waste.

Find your nearest shoe recycling centre. Shoes put into textile banks are given to charity shops, the homeless or even sent abroad Shoes should be tied together before being deposited in the banks as they tend to go astray.
Scrap metal
Scrap metal can be taken to your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre for disposal.
Straw, hay and wood shavings
Household straw, hay, wood shavings and rabbit bedding can be put into your Green Garden Waste Bin for doorstep collection. Alternatively, you could order a compost bin to make your own compost.

Tetra Paks
Tetra Paks cannot be recycled through our doorstep recycling scheme and should not be put into your brown bin or green box. However, they can be placed into designated Tetra Pak collection banks at five of Pendle's recycling sites. You can also put some other paper-based food packaging materials (such as waxed-paper yoghurt cartons) into these banks.

Water Filters
BRITA waterfilters has launched an in store recycling scheme. Recycling bins are now situated in a range of high street stores such as Robert Dyas, Argos, Cargo, Comet, Sainsbury's, Homebase, Asda and Makro. Other major retailers will be following soon.
The BRITA branded bins will be located next to the existing water filter category in store. Customers can recycle any BRITA consumer product filter cartridge, including those for the new BRITA water filter taps.
Wood
You can take wood to your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre for disposal or recycling. Wood can also be added to your compost heap or put into your Green Garden Waste Bin as sawdust and wood shavings.
