Parks Byelaws

View pages in this section

From 1st June 2009 Pendle's parks, open spaces and children's playgrounds will have new byelaws1 which will help make them much safer places to visit.

Pendle Council's Parks Department has been working with its Friends Groups to replace out of date byelaws with those that can address current day issues.

From June all games and activities in the parks must show consideration and respect to other park users and the environment.

Examples include:

  • nothing should be removed such as benches or shrubs
  • tree climbing, camping and fires will not be allowed unless authorised
  • bikes must only be used in designated areas
  • those over 14 years should not be in a play area unless in charge of a child under 14.

The old byelaws are no longer appropriate for today. The new ones will help the Council and police to ensure our parks are places for everyone to enjoy.

They give us a tool which means we can act if those using our parks and open spaces are being a nuisance.

We'll be taking a common sense approach but failure to comply with them could mean a fine of up to £500!

1 The new bylaws were confirmed by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government on 1st May 2009.
