Equality and diversity

Equality, Diversity and Cohesion

Equality is about everyone having an equal chance to live, work and learn; free from discrimination and regardless of background, race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, age, language, religion or culture. In the Equality Act 2010, each of these different equality 'strands' are called 'protected characteristics'.

In Pendle we are committed to providing the best possible services for everyone. This isn't about treating people equally, but instead meeting every different customer's needs in the best way.

Diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It means that each individual is unique and recognises and celebrates our individual differences. Taking into accountrthe diversity in our communities helps us to recognise different needs and to deliver our services accordingly.

Pendle Borough Council is committed to equalities both in the provision of services and as an employer. The seriousness of this commitment is reflected in the Council adopting equalities and community cohesion as key priority issues within its Corporate Plan. Everyone has a role to play in ensuring fairness towards colleagues and the community we serve.
