The Feeding of Pigeons
Reasons For Not Feeding Pigeons:
Encouragement of other pests
The feeding of pigeons attracts mice and rats which may take any uneaten food. Their nests, dead carcasses and droppings provide a home for a variety of insects which can spread into buildings causing damage, skin irritation and a general nuisance.
Transmission of diseases
Pigeons carry a number of potentially infectious diseases. The contamination of food by pigeon droppings or even by the birds themselves can transmit diseases to humans.
Hazards to pedestrians and drivers
The droppings from pigeons are a danger to the public as they can cause slippery pavements and roads. Also when flocks are startled and fly off this can unsettle pedestrians and drivers.
Fouling of buildings
Where birds nest or roost fouling will occur. This is unsightly and the acidic droppings can erode stonework and causing long term damage. Gutters and drainpipes can become blocked causing flooding. Fire escapes can be become coated with droppings making them unsafe to use.
