Addressing Climate Change in Pendle

View pages in this section

What was the issue?

  • Climate change is now a major challenge which requires a global, national and local response.
  • We want to be part of the solution to climate change here in Pendle.

What did we do?

  • We signed up to the national climate change campaign, 10:10. By doing this we have pledged to reduce our carbon emissions by 10% by 2010.
  • We encouraged our partners in Pendle, including Nelson and Colne College, Housing Pendle, Pendle Leisure Trust, and East Lancashire Primary Care Trust, to sign up to 10:10.
  • We adopted a Climate Change Action Plan in June 2009 and developed a Climate Change Working Group.
  • We monitor energy consumption for both our buildings and fleet vehicles every quarter.
  • We are encouraging paperless meetings and are looking to introduce staff travel plans.
  • We have installed solar water heating at our Fleet Street building in Nelson.
  • We are working with user groups of community centres to ensure they understand their heating systems.
  • We introduced the 'Recycle More for Pendle' campaign, introducing brown bins to households in Pendle.
  • We gave out grants and advise to people to improve the efficiencies in their homes.

What difference have we made to local people?

  • In 2008/09, the council generated in the region of 2,019 tonnes of CO2 from its buildings and transport operations.
  • In 2009/10, this figure has reduced to 1884 tonnes, an overall reduction of 6.6 %.
  • We've made fantastic progress with our recycling and have seen a reduction in the amount of waste from Pendle ending up in the landfill.
  • We helped cut over 7,000 tonnes of carbon emissions through energy saving measures in homes, saving over £1.4 million on household bills across Pendle last year.

What were/are the keys to success?

  • We recognised that there is a clear need for all local service providers in Pendle to work closely with local communities as well as our regional and national partners to tackle the causes of climate change.
  • We have shown we are committed to reducing our carbon emissions to create a healthier and sustainable environment for our future generations.

What are we doing next?

  • Our Climate Change Working Group constantly monitors and delivers actions to reduce our carbon emissions.
  • Our Climate Change Action Plan will be regularly revised and updated to include new actions to help reduce our carbon emissions.
  • At the end of 2010, we will evaluate our success as well as our partners' success in the 10:10 campaign.
  • Following the 10:10, we will develop new targets to reaffirm our commitment to climate change.
  • We have launched a "There's no Planet B" campaign to continue to raise the issue of climate change through communications work.
