Nelson Housing Market Renewal

The Vision for Nelson

View pages in this section

"A more attractive town with a vibrant and successful town centre serving sustainable and socially cohesive neighbourhoods, within a restructured housing market comprising improved existing housing and choice of high quality new accommodation, and an improving and diverse economic base that is better able to meet the needs and aspirations of all its residents in the 21 st Century"

This vision forms part of Nelson's Area Development Framework (ADF), a regeneration plan for the next 10-15 years. It was developed by consultants Nathaniel Lichfield and Partners after an in-depth analysis of how the town functions and widespread consultation which included walkabouts, ward-based workshops, neighbourhood 'drop-ins' and public meetings with residents, local agencies and businesses.

Challenges Nelson faces

Challenges Housing Market Renewal will try to overcome include:
  • An oversupply of terraced houses
  • A backlog of investment in housing leading to a high number of 'unfit' properties
  • Deterioration of conditions within residential neighbourhoods
  • A declining town centre
  • Lack of facilities
  • Poor private sector landlords
  • Low quality employment opportunities
  • Poor educational attainment
