Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What should I do if I think I have food poisoning?

Answer:

If you have symptoms of any abdominal illness (e.g. diarrhoea, vomiting) you are advised not to handle food.

See your GP as soon as possible. Your GP may arrange for a faecal specimen to be taken to confirm your illness.

If you are a food handler with confirmed food poisoning, you may be formally excluded from work pending recovery.

If your GP considers that you have food poisoning, he will notify the Council of the results and an investigation can then take place.

If you suspect a particular food, it is useful to make a note of details of the food and where/when it was purchased and consumed. This information will be useful if food poisoning is confirmed.
