Hedgerow Regulations

Top of a hedge against the skyThe Hedgerow Regulations were made under section 87 of the Environment Act 1995 and came into operation on 1 June 1997. They aim to protect important hedgerows in the countryside (garden hedges are not affected) by controlling their removal through a system of notification to the Local Planning Authority (Pendle Borough Council). Hedgerows are distinctive features of the countryside, contributing positively to landscape character and wildlife habitat.

Anyone wishing to remove a hedge or part of a hedge must notify the Council (using a Hedgerow Removal Notice form) setting out their reasons.

The service is available Monday - Friday 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.
