Students in Higher Education

2011/12: Students who are already in higher education can apply for loans and grants now.

2012/13: Students who start university or college after 1 September 2012 (academic year 2012/13) will be on a new student finance scheme.

The main changes are:

  • universities and colleges can charge tuition fees of up to £9,000
  • tuition fee loans will go up to cover the higher fees
  • you don't start repaying your loan until you earn £21,000 (up from £15,000)
  • part-time students can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan (replacing grants)

You will still be able to apply for financial assistance and loans via Student Finance England. Find out more about what's available at the Student Finance pages on the Direct Gov website

Students in Sixth Form or Further Education

Schools, colleges and training providers have funds to help you if you're studying or starting a full-time course from September 2011 and think you might struggle with the costs for your studies. For advice speak to student support services or your tutor.

Disabled Students

The Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) is intended to assist students  with disabilities to benefit as fully as possible from their course. They are designed to provide financial assistance towards the provision of special equipment, non-medical helpers and other general expenses.

Assistance for students aged 16-19 with the additional costs of travelling to your institution can be given under certain circumstances.
