Roads and highways - walls

Close up of stone wallRetaining walls that support the highway and were provided when the road was constructed, are usually the responsibility of the Highways Partnership.

In circumstances where the adjacent land has been lowered and a retaining wall provided to support the highway then the responsibility lies with the landowner.

Retaining walls supporting land adjacent to the highway are the responsibility of the landowner unless they were provided when the highway was altered in line or level.

If you think there is a problem with a retaining wall next to the highway such as cracks, slippage, missing masonry or damaged coping stones etc. you can report it to the Highways Partnership.

  • Report a problem with a retaining wall by calling Lancashire County Council's Customer Service Centre 0845 053 0011
