Salt box
Salt bins will normally only be provided by Lancashire County Council at problem sites on minor roads which are not on a salting route or where there is a particular hazard and the
road in question is treated at a late stage in the gritting cycle.
Locations singled out for attention are those subject to one or more of the following criteria:
- exposed position or otherwise significantly affected by winter weather
- not on salting route (or late in cycle)
- combination of vertical and horizontal profile producing a hazardous condition, ie steep bend with adverse camber
- junction hazard, ie steep road down to junction with main road
- high pedestrian movement, ie to local centres
Most sites meeting the criteria have already been identified and bins provided. Therefore, in general, it is not expected that bins will be provided at new sites. Normally, bins will not be provided on housing estates, although there may be exceptional sites that require consideration. You may still wish to report a site to Lancashire County Council for consideration by completing an online form (external link) or using the contact details below.
In total, Lancashire County Council has 453 yellow grit bins across Pendle.
In addition, Pendle Council's Area Committees has 15 red grit bins in the Brierfield and Reedley area and 18 in the Nelson area.
If a red grit bin needs refilling (not the yellow ones), please telephone Pendle Council on 01282 661743. If you would like to request the provision of a red grit bin from Pendle Council, contact your ward councillor(s).
Most of the yellow grit bins are provided by Lancashire County Council. If a yellow grit bin needs refilling, please telephone them on 0845 053 0011 during office hours or use the online form [external link].
However, a few of the grit bins (eg near sheltered housing) may belong to a housing association. You can call Help Direct on 0303 333 1111 which will put you in touch with the correct people.
