Gritting
Lancashire County Council is responsible for carrying out salting/gritting and snow clearing within Pendle. Even so, not all roads can be treated. There is a priority order comprising:
- county motorways and principal "A" roads
- all "B" roads
and then
- between or through large population centres
- roads servicing hospitals, ambulances and fire stations
- roads leading to main centres of employment and on important commuter routes
- roads leading to important industrial and military establishments
- roads providing the only access to a village
Please note that estate and other minor roads without appreciable gradients are not treated.
A weather forecast is received by computer link each day in winter from the Met Office. This forecast is fine tuned locally by recordings received from a weather station east of Laneshaw Bridge. A decision is then made on whether or not to grit. This hi-tech forecast is backed up by confirmation site visits to known trouble spots.
The list of roads to be treated may be extended when snow and ice persist and provided that the above priority roads have been already been restored.
