Disposal of hazardous waste and asbestos

Some types of waste are harmful to health and the environment and you should never put them in your bin. You must take the following types of waste to a recycling centre:

Batteries

  • Small household batteries
  • Lead acid batteries

Household chemicals

  • Pesticides
  • Antifreeze
  • Solvents

Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE)

  • Large household appliances (washing machines, cookers)
  • Small household appliances (kettles, toasters, microwaves)
  • Cooling appliances (fridges/freezers)
  • TVs and computer monitors
  • Fluorescent tubes (including energy saving light bulbs)

Disposal of asbestos

Asbestos is a hazardous substance and should never be disposed of in your general waste bin.

Any loose asbestos placed in your bin puts the health of our workers at risk.

We accept correctly wrapped asbestos, up to a limit of 6 x sheets/bags per visit and 18 x sheets/bags per year.

Please take all asbestos to any of these recycling centres:

Before taking asbestos to a recycling centre you need to make sure it is wrapped properly:

  • It must be wrapped in heavy duty polythene sheets
  • Smaller pieces of asbestos should be double-bagged and securely sealed

Please note that we only accept cement bonded asbestos. Fibrous asbestos should only be removed and disposed of by a registered asbestos removal contractor.

Recycling centres provide asbestos wrapping materials free of charge (in limited quantities) for householders. You will need to collect them from the recycling centre.

Cement bonded products

For safety reasons, site staff will always err on the side of caution and treat all cement bonded products as asbestos, even if the material has been tested for the presence of asbestos.

Artex may also contain asbestos fibres and should be wrapped and disposed of via the asbestos skip and not the plasterboard skip.
