Elections - voting

Clip Art of a Ballot BoxYou have three choices when deciding how to vote:

  • You can vote at a polling station
  • You can vote from home (or elsewhere) via a Postal vote
  • or you can get someone else to do it via a Proxy vote

Shortly before election day, unless you have applied to vote by post, you will also receive a polling card from Electoral Services, outling the date and time of the election and the location of your polling station.

Polling Stations

Due to tradition, all elections in this country take place on a Thursday. Polling stations are usually open at 7am and close at 10pm.

Notices of forthcoming elections are posted at the Town Hall and at local libraries.

Postal Votes

Anyone is entitled to register for a postal vote.

Proxy Votes

You can only apply for a long-term proxy vote if you have a specific reason such as a disability or living overseas.

To vote by proxy for just one election, you must have a reason, for example you will be on holiday and unable to return in time to vote.
