Hackney Carriage (Taxi) Licences
A hackney carriage is more commonly called a taxi and can be hailed at a hackney carriage rank or in the street.
Section 38 of the Town Police Clauses Act 1847 requires that all vehicles acting as hackney carriages be licenced.

All hackney carriages in Pendle are red in colour and have a meter fitted.
Hackney Carriage Drivers' Licences
Under Section 46 of the above Act, a hackney carriage licence is required before any person can drive a hackney carriage (commonly called a taxi).
