Educational Awards and Benefits
Free School Meals
Free school meals are offered to children of families who are in receipt of:
- Income Support or
- Job Seekers Allowance (Income based) or
- Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 or
- The Guaranteed element of State Pension Credit or
- Income related Employment Support Allowance or
- Child Tax Credit and are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and your annual income, as assessed by the Inland Revenue, does not exceed £16,040 (April 09 figure)

School Transport Assistance
As a guide, travelling expenses are normally paid to pupils who attend the nearest suitable school and the distance from home is:
- Two miles or more by the shortest available walking route if your child is under 8 years of age
- Two miles or more for pupils aged eight years of age or over, who are eligible for free school meals or the parents are in receipt of the maximum amount of working tax credit and attending a primary school.
- Three miles or more if your child is eight years old or over.

School Clothing Grants
School clothing grants are payments given at the discretion of local authorities to assist with the cost of school clothing for pupils attending state maintained schools.
