Roadside seats

Bench by the side of a country roadAlthough there is no statutory duty to provide and maintain roadside seats, Pendle Council's Engineering and Special Projects department has an annual budget of £2,500 to maintain approximately 350 roadside seats and to provide new ones wherever possible for the benefit of the general public.

Other bodies, such as town and parish councils, can also be licensed by Lancashire County Council (as highway authority) to place and maintain roadside seats if they wish.

Commemorative seats

The provision of a seat as a memorial provides a tribute to a loved one which is also a benefit to the community in which they lived. Such a memorial would last for the life of the seat. The location and fixing of the seat would require the consent of Lancashire County Council, although we would seek this on your behalf.

We can provide you with details of a range of suitable seats and plaques. Once you have chosen your preferred seat and the inscription for the plaque, you would be responsible for the cost of purchasing and installation and we would then "adopt" the seat and be responsible for its future maintenance.

We would be happy to discuss any proposals with you.

Requests for the installation of seats and reports of damage to existing roadside seats should be made to Engineering and Special Projects using the contact details below.
