What is a footpath?

A footpath is the name given to a public right of way which is restricted for use only by pedestrians. Footpaths are commonly found in the countryside but there are many in urban areas too.

Footpaths are looked after by the Countryside Access Team at Pendle Council.

The Council is responsible for protecting people's right to use public rights of way. This includes maintaining the surface of public paths, preventing the obstruction of public rights of way and signposting public paths from the roadside.

For further information, please see our main Countryside Access pages.
